Tier 1 in Trouble: Coaches as the Lifeline

About Casey

I am Casey Watts, founder of Casey Watts, Coaching & Consulting, LLC.  I am a School Impact Strategist as well as a school-based instructional specialist in East Texas.  I received my Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Elementary Education and my Master's Degree of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University.  Over the past several years, I have focused my research and work on effective collaboration that leads to collective efficacy.  In this work, I have recognized the importance of the components that are absolutely necessary for cohesive, vision-driven teams.  In my experience, I have realized that this is possible, even when you feel overwhelmed with resistance and roadblocks.

I am a visionary, conversationalist, and strategist with wonder and invention as my two working geniuses.  This helps me to ask the right questions, ponder potential possibilities, and help teams create a vision for their organization or school.  It also means that I'm able to invent and script the critical moves alongside teams that will move them along the trajectory toward the vision crafted!  Clarity work, paired with identity work and collaboration work, are what build the cohesive, vision-driven teams that make sustainable change happen!

Tier 1 in Trouble: Coaches as the Lifeline

I recently read a post on LinkedIn that read: "If you have 800 students in Tier 2, you don't have an intervention problem; you have a Tier 1 problem." That post blew up with comments! Hundreds of people engaged with the post. So, I started asking different groups the question, "Do you believe Tier 1 instruction is lacking or flat out missing? If so, why?" Again, the responses were intense! Tier 1 instruction is a hot topic with many perspectives to consider. In this session, we are going to dig into this topic. We'll ask lots of questions: Is Tier 1 instruction really collapsing? If so, why? What are we doing or NOT doing to get out of this tiered mess we've created over the years? And how do instructional coaches serve as the lifeline to revive high quality Tier 1 instruction?
